Our first National Park selection is... Mammoth Cave National Park!As the NPS Website puts it, Rolling hills, deep river valleys, and the world's longest known cave system. Mammoth Cave National Park is home to thousands of years of human history and a rich diversity of plant and animal life, earning it the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve. We are starting off with Mammoth Cave. Moving forward, each season, our young learners will get to choose the next national park to investigate. While I will offer topics of investigation, our homeschoolers will decide what they want to study and how they can express their ideas using art and building materials. in real time...What real life situations can the students dive into in real time? Cave mapping, ecosystems, wildlife conservation efforts and lots more is happening in real time. Mammoth Cave has several ecosystems including caves(obviously) forests and waterways. Bat populations in the caves has declined due to white nose syndrome, for example. As Leonardo Da Vinci studied the Bat's anatomy to learn about flight, we also will look deep into nature to understand our world and our own perspectives. How are scientists working to solve the problems in real time. I'm already excited for Synthetic Bat dissection just in time for Halloween!
